Shodan Grading
Saturday 17/11/18 @ Marshland Hall Dojo
Following an excellent 3 hour course with Paul Herbert Sensei 3 Samurai students undertook their Shodan Grading. There was elements of the grading during the course. However now was the time to perform.
The Shodan Grading consisted of 3 main elements. Firstly Kihon which are Basic techniques and combinations. Secondly Kata, set pattern of movement. In addition to Kumite, demonstarting defences against a range of attacks. Free flow kumite was tested in the same vein.
During a tough examination students had to show good technique in addition to great spirit. Above all an understanding of what they are doing is most important.
The OSKA Shodan Grading panel consisted of one 5th Dan one 4th Dan and one 3rd Dan. With an independent observer to oversee events. The decision of the panel was to award Shodans passes to two students.

Susan Powel achieved Shodan in addition to Lexie Klibanecz, age 11 achieving her Junior Shodan. Both ladies have worked extreemly hard all year preparing for this. They are excellent examples of Dan Grade Karate-Ka.
For Susan this has been a life long journey starting her Karate some 30 plus years ago. Therefore Samurai cannot take all the credit here. As training with many good instructors in her time layed the foundation in reaching this milestone.
Lexie has excellent potential to move through the junior ranks to become a very good Senior Dan Grade. She has an excellent spirit and demonstrates this when competeing against the boys in Kumite.
Both ladies train 3 to 4 times a week, often more with great passion and focus. In conclusion they are great examples of These Girls Can.
If you think that can then why not join them. We have lots of very able and focused ladies in our Dojos. You can find a Class near you on the link below.
