Here we look at the benefits of a structured training programme. Why it is important in terms of learning and understanding
Our Karate syllabus very much follows the same pathway as our school education system. We employ methods of repetition in training to both learn and absorb principals and techniques. This is vital in terms of building up muscle memory and physical intelligence in the body.
Rather like a child spending their primary school years continually reciting their times tables. Learning each one in turn before moving to the next one. Therefore, building up a foundation and retention of knowledge. Then at age 11 they can instantly recall 7 x 6 if asked. Pretty much every adult is able to do this because of the nature of learning.
FOUNDATION OF LEARNING
In the same way after a similar time period of repetition, learning and retention, working through one technique and principal at a time. At aged 11 a student should be able recall a technique in the same manner. This forms the foundation on which to build to the next level. Once learnt and retained that level leads to the next and so one. Just as learning the times tables lays the foundation to more complicated mathematical calculations.
In following this proven method not only builds the foundation of good technique but also has the following benefits.
BENEFITS OF A STRUCTURED TRAINING PROGRAMME
IMPROVED CONCENTRATION
Following instructions and focusing on structured routines builds concentration and memory. Learning the structured moves of Kata is an example of this.
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Building muscular strength, co-ordination core stability and balance in line with childrens growth patterns.
MENTAL FOCUS
Building a positive mind set and can do attitude. Learning not to be afraid of tackling new tasks and challenges. Using attributes like perseverance and persistence to overcome perceived problems.
BUILDING SOCIAL PARTNERSHIPS
By working in teams and pairs students learn the importance of helping others with humility and
understanding.
DEVELOPING SELF WORTH
Seeing the value of themselves as individuals in a positive light and without ego.
BUILDING MATURITY & RESPONSIBILITY
By developing a deep understanding of what they are doing and what it represents gives a maturity of character. The responsibility of what they learn and to display the character and behaviours expected are also key in being able to set examples for others to follow.
SENSE OF PRIDE
When working hard with dedication and commitment results in real rewards and achievement it has great value. This boosts pride and raises aspirations to achieve higher.
CONFIDENCE BUILDING

CONFIDENCE IS THE ABSOULTE KEY TO ALL THE ABOVE ATTRIBUTES. IT IS THE No1 ATTRIBUTE THAT KARATE TRAINING WILL DEVELOP.
The journey through the Karate Syllabus can look pretty similar to the journey through education from Primary school to University.
PRIMARY KARATE TRAINING
Primary Karate training for a period of 5 to 6 years from age 5 upwards, will give children a primary foundation in basic principals. After this period a student should be ready to undertake a Junior Black Belt . Junior level of understanding and ability is stressed here.
SECONDARY KARATE TRAINING
At age 11 the student moves to secondary karate education and after a period of 5 years further training at age 16 could be ready for a full Shodan Black Belt grade. Call this O level standard.
KARATE COLLEGE
They then move to Karate College for 2 years and if they study hard could be ready to undertake Nidan grade at age 18. Call this A Level Karate.
KARATE UNIVERSITY
This then leads to Karate University where a much deeper understanding is imparted and after 3 years minimum the student could be ready for a Karate Degree. Sandan grade.
At Sandan or 3rdDan grade the student should have a deeper understanding of why not just how and then be able to teach and lead others. Above all they should still be and always remain a student. At this stage the student will be grateful for their Primary education as this will still form the basis and foundation of their current and ongoing training. The benefits of a structured training programme will have created their foundation for success.
These time periods are not set in stone and nor should they be. They should be flexible to allow the individual to progress at their pace and ability. Unlike the education system Karate study does not force all the students to go through the same time frame funnel at the same time. There is no race or competition with anyone else except yourself.
